Tribute to Professor Hugh Barr: Pioneer of Interprofessional Education and His Legacy for the Americas

Professor Hugh Barr, a global reference in interprofessional education, recently passed away, leaving an invaluable legacy in advancing collaborative health care worldwide. He devoted decades of his career to promoting Interprofessional Education (IPE), serving as the President of CAIPE (Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education) for nearly 40 years and spearheading initiatives to strengthen collaborative practice among health professionals.

His contribution to Latin America and the Caribbean was essential in consolidating the interprofessional approach in the region. He actively participated in the “4th Regional Technical Meeting on Interprofessional Education in the Americas,” held virtually on November 23 and 30, 2020, addressing global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and encouraging mutual learning across professions as a key element for resilient health systems.

Through CAIPE, Barr played a vital role supporting the translation of technical publications, fostering access to international theory, guidelines, and interprofessional educational practices. These initiatives facilitated local implementation of innovative experiences and the formation of national networks, benefiting thousands of professionals and students across the continent.

The Americas IPE Network recognizes and honors Professor Hugh Barr’s exemplary trajectory, whose dedication and wisdom continue to inspire new generations committed to collaborative education and care.
